Bio

As a family gerontologist guided by the principles of caring science and the life course perspective, Dr. Benson's program of research has a translation focus aimed at enhancing the lives of older adults and their caregiving families.

Through multiple collaborations in nursing, palliative medicine, social work, and family science, Dr. Benson studies the reciprocal associations between older adults' close relationships and their overall wellbeing—translating this research-based knowledge into interventions, programs, and other strategies for healthy aging and better caregiving experiences.

Acknowledging a relational ontology, she is specifically interested in examining complex family structure and processes as they relate to:

  • caregiving families of older adults living with cancer or other serious illnesses,
  • decision-making processes for aging-related issues, and
  • intimate relationships in later life
