I have been on the GSA staff since April 2003.
One of my primary responsibilities is serving as the editor and primary author of Gerontology News. I work with the regular contributors and the design and print vendors to produce the newsletter each month.
I also am GSA’s point of contact for journalists on the age beat. I maintain a growing database of reporters, and keep them informed of research presented in GSA’s journals and at Annual Scientific Meetings through numerous press releases. I also supervise the Press Room during the meetings, where I regularly collaborate with prominent Society members to conduct press briefings on new discoveries in the field.
I am the director of GSA's Journalists in Aging Fellows Program, which seeks to expand coverage of aging-related news and allows reporters to participate in GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting.
Another integral part of GSA’s media outreach program is the Expert Referral Service, which I manage. This tool — a listing of members’ self-identified areas of professional expertise — allows me put reporters in touch with authorities on nearly any topic related to aging. I also use it to fulfill the general public’s inquiries about gerontology.
My job requires me to act as a consultant on many other communications released from the GSA office, such as listserv messages, marketing collateral, business correspondence, and membership welcome and renewal letters; I also compile the GSA Announcements e-newsletter and edit material for the Society’s website.
