Dr. Greg O'Neill

Director,
National Academy on an Aging Society

Bio

I'm director of the National Academy on an Aging Society, the public policy institute of The Gerontological Society of America, where I develop and direct grant-funded research projects exploring the opportunities and challenges of an aging society.

I specialize in the demographics of aging, baby boomers, civic engagement, and the future of work and retirement. My publications include The State of Aging and Health in America, a national and state-by-state report card on healthy aging, and “The Baby Boom Age Wave: Success or Tsunami?”

I serve as associate editor of Public Policy & Aging Report, GSA's quarterly focusing on aging-related policy issues.

From 2004 to 2009, I lead GSA’s “Civic Engagement in an Older America” project, an initiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies, and has worked on projects with several organizations (including Civic Ventures, Experience Wave, and PBS) to advance the issue of older adult civic engagement in the research, media, and public policy arenas.

In 2009, I founded "Aging Means Business", a communications venture spotlighting breakthrough ideas, innovations and strategies for the 50+ market & business creation by the 50+ demographic. Also, I'm currently a mentor with the Aging 2.0 GENerator founders program that supports the most promising entrepreneurs working to enhance the lives of older adults and improve long-term care.

I received my PhD in Sociology from Duke University with a concentration in population studies.
