2014 Annual Scientific Meeting

Hello all, 
So often research focuses on the individual who has mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Our team will present research that focuses on not only African Americans with MCI but also on their support systems. Do you feel responses to memory loss differ across groups and across family members, and if so, why?

We found that speaking with caregivers and family members of individuals with MCI sheds light on family-level perceptions of the impairment and how it changes relationships with those who have MCI. 

This session is relevant to the Alzheimer's Disease and the Qualitative Research Interest Groups. I hope you join in on this conversation and attend this session in DC.

I agree - there are differences regarding the perception of dementia as a disease. Very true.  If we can understand the particular quality of social factors that are predictive of, or associated with MCI, AD, and other dementias, we have an opportunity to focus on strengths in the African American and Black cultures that may help to mitigate further disease progression.
